As Dave Pappas Creative Services jumps aboard the reality TV bandwagon - specifically in its promotional role for two upcoming MTV series - some strange opportunities have come to the fore.
Pappas and marketing cohort Peter Guarino were recently approached by billionaire TV producer John de Mol, progenitor of "I Want Your Child. And Nothing Else," a reality program in which a contestant seeks out potential sperm donors for her child.
De Mol, also the brains behind reality show pioneer "Big Brother," contracted the firm for a little "creative production."
"We are going to donate our sperm to the show," said Pappas, "stopping at no length to spread the creative genomes which make this design studio the free, fun-wielding façade of the advertising industry.
The show, to be released today, will air tentatively in a "one-off" competition with four other reality TV programs in Amsterdam - including one that chronicles five former prostitutes starting a café. But De Mol sees in his spunky series an opportunity for mainstream American markets. In his efforts to cross-pollinate, parts of the show if continued will be taped in the United States - including this fall in Brooklyn, N.Y.
Guarino, DPS' lead project manager and marketing consultant, first fielded the inquiry, and was a bit taken aback by the offer.
"I thought [de Bol] needed Web work or poster design, as we did for MTV" Guarino said. "I had no idea he was looking for us to produce that ."
De Mol's search for donors was based on a variety of gene contributors. The show, for instance, visits M.C. Hammer's mansion in Fremont, Calif., for the woman seeking financially sound offspring. She also stops in Washington, D.C. , while seeking the "WMD" gene - which stands for "Wasn't My Daddy."
Otherwise, de Mol said, the taping takes place almost entirely in France, which is hesitant to be involved with any project that could be considered "productive" to society.
But when it came time to find the creative juices, de Mol came to Dave Pappas Services, which confidently came through on its return.
More donations, Pappas said, were being made as this release went to press.
